"He's the kind of person
who tells me to 'cheer up'
when I'm depressed,"
he says, scoffing,

and I shake my head
and say,
"What a useless comment."

He chuckles, agrees,
but I keep thinking about
him,
about all the "cheer up"s
and "just be happy"s
he's heard in his life.

I want to say "cheer up,"
I want my words to magically
cure him, heal him,
crush his depression
in a way that no pills ever could,
but I know it doesn't work like that.

Happiness is not an item
to be obtained with quarters
and coupons,
it is not a country to travel to
in airplanes and sailboats.

Happiness is a change in the wind,
a flicker from east to west
that cannot be upheld permanently.

For him, it is a road
blocked by people who roll their eyes
and tell him to get over himself.

When I wrap my arms around him,
he laughs again,
sinks into my body.

I think about hollow rooms,
sound echoing off the walls.
a conversation I actually had. people tell me about things they're going through, and I never know how to help them.

i'm backed up on messages, but I've read them all. thanks for being patient with me, guys! I'm trying to get back on a normal schedule. I have lots to post for you all.

My best friend suffers from severe depression sometimes. Having no idea what to say or do to help him is torture. You captured the feeling perfectly I think.

Wonderful work, and it`s great to see you back! I love the melancholic... but not overly dramatic... theme. :)

Indeed. Being in the middle of depression feels much like how you feel about helping them; powerless.

As for all of the "help," the guilt trips, the accusations of narcissism, of wallowing for the sake of wallowing, of wanting to be and feel this way, of flippancy and disdain directed at them... Of all of it, isolation seems the most cruel to me - not simply because it's what you already tend toward when depressed, but because friends, family, random people, and society as a whole imposes it on you.

If I may, I'd like to link to this (and perhaps quote a few lines) in a blog post at some point in the next few weeks. Thanks for the lovely poem.

It's difficult enough to live with depression, but I couldn't imagine dealing with people giving you a hard time about it. How dare they, honestly, tell someone to get over a mental condition? That's bonkers and totally insensitive. I think the problem is that people just don't understand...and it's horrible for those who have to struggle with depression and also juggle not wanting to "bother" other people. The truth is, if someone is bothered by another person because they have depression, they're the weak ones who need to get over themselves.

Aww, it's my pleasure to write it. Thank you for reading and taking an interest in it! Sure, it's fine to post it in a blog post as long as you give credit (as I'm sure you were going to, anyway, haha). And I'd love to see the post! Could you send me a link, please?

This is incredibly accurate. I used to feel, all the time, the way that he feels; that happiness is a road being blocked. I still do sometimes, although not as much as before.

Hey, thanks! I'm sorry about that. I wish people would change the way they act about depression. You wouldn't tell someone with cancer to get over themselves and stop being sick, so stop telling that to people who have depression.

Yeah. :/ But even if I am depressed, I don't show it. I'm usually a pretty optimistic and encouraging person. Or at least I try to be. :)

ikr? I feel like an idiot if I can't think of anything to say. And it's not that I don't care, because I do. I just want to be helpful and supportive and I go totally dumb in moments like that for some reason.
