yesterday
you felt the first heartache
that really mattered.
now you've become
a virgin painted black
biting your lip
and cultivating your bitterness.
but Katie, Katie,
it's not the last time.
you're gonna wind up
with bloodied knees
more times than you can count,
and you're gonna spend
many nights that leave
old-road potholes
dripping into your pillows.
You're gonna panic
and almost crash your car.
you're gonna say infinite
hellos and goodbyes
in the span of a moment
and at times
you will feel like an apple tree
planted in a jam jar,
crushed and misplaced.
but Katie,
I'd be lying if I said
you won't grow.
ii.
you were wrong
every time you left without
saying goodbye,
and you were wrong
every time you went to sleep
without saying "I love you"
or giving a kiss goodnight.
you make mistakes
more often than not,
but you fix it.
or you learn to live with it,
that's the only way to recover.
iii.
you'll fall in love.
real love.
it won't be like
that boy or that boy or that boy.
it won't be like anything you've ever known.
it will be new and beautiful
and at times agonizing
but it will be the most
amazing hurt you'll ever feel,
the kind that leaves you
absolutely breathless and
keeps you up
way past midnight's beck and call.
you'll love him so much
and feel so uncontrollably happy
that you won't remember
how much your paper cuts burned
or the way your best friend
left you at the park.
everything will become small
and mute
underneath your own heart.
iv.
dear Katie.
you probably don't recognize me.
that's okay.
I'm happy you don't.

an open letter to my twelve year old self
one day you will cut all your hair off,
and hang up a map of the world in your
room and you will look at it on days
you think your life is going nowhere.
i hate to tell you this, but this isn’t
your worst year. it also isn’t your
best.
one day you will cut all your hair off
and realize that some poems need to be read
out loud, to an audience, so you’ll take a hammer
and some nails and build yourself one
out of a girl whose veins look fragile but
whose bones are strong, a boy who isn’t as tall as
he thinks he is, but whose lifelines are the deepest
you’ve ever seen, and a girl whose eyes remind you of the
east
Literature
A letter to people from my past
You just can't go back,
even to the times you once thought were the greatest.
It's like the playground you played on as a child.
You have endearing memories of the unique mixture of warm mulch and cool metal,
but when you return to it years later,
it's not quite how you remember.
The once large play area now seems small compared to the large cities you've explored.
The slide that once seemed to go on for miles
is nothing compared to the walks and runs and car rides you've been on:
the thousands of miles you've conquered.
The swing that once made you feel like a bird high in the sky hardly gets you off the ground-
feet dragging.

Continuum
Continuum
blown speech and
act of whirling
roman candles and
cyclones
you sing how to
disappear
completely
like it’s your theme
as momentum stills
like ripples in water
finally coming to pass
the impetuses
of lethargy
linger like
firework shrapnel
scattered across s(k)in(k)s
but i won’t allow
your subsistence
to be swept away
because i need you
just as much as
you need me
and we must occupy
this space
before we reside
ubiquity is the present
and the goal
and we will
catch the lo(e)ss
i promise
and put you
back together again
because i refuse
to let you exist
but not live

This is a submission for Khaimin's contest! I'm really excited and I was happy to try out this prompt. I'm happy with how it turned out, it surprised me how personal it wound up being. It's like the current me writing to the me of last year. I've changed a lot in these past few months. i'm not the same person I was yesterday, even.
If you don't know, this contest is meant to be a letter written to your past self. Check out the details here:
